I’ve played to a low single digit handicap for years, and though I enjoyed the process of working on my own swing, I’d go through lengthy periods of time when I was searching for the key to my swing. Invariably, I’d find something, play well for a few rounds, and then enter another lull.

This year I decided to work with a Stack and Tilt instructor. Like many, I misunderstood a lot of the principles and had a lot of misconceptions about the swing, but with 20 or so PGA Tour players taking to it, I reconsidered. I’m glad I did – this year has been one of the most productive in my golf career. Not only do I know how to swing, I know how to fix it when things go awry.

Stack and Tilt is a fairly simple method of playing good golf, but nobody can do it alone. If you can’t find an instructor nearby, this book does a great job as a stand-in (and if you can find an instructor, this book is a great reminder between lessons). The book’s photos wonderfully illustrate the concepts and the instructions are simple, clear, and concise. Not only are the positions and ideas explained thoroughly, but PGA Tour pros contribute their “feelings” and “sensations” to help players who are helping themselves.

The book is more than a “here is how to swing the club” guide as well. The last third of the book is invaluable to golfers as it contains drills, common faults and their fixes, and much more. This book does more to actually help the golfer in 240 or so pages than most golf instructional books do in 400. It’s not much of a stretch to call this potentially the most beneficial golf instruction book since Hogan’s “Five Lessons.”

Even if you’re not a fan of the Stack and Tilt swing, I encourage you to pick up this book. Read the first chapter – I think you may change your mind. Implement some of the principles of the swing and, when you start beating your buddies, the book will pay for itself in no time. :-)

I was looking for a book that actually had workout routines to specifically target areas that would increase my golf game and this one had it. It also has pre-season and off-season workouts which are a plus. It is a very detailed book. Great book!

      2. Qurtman says

This book has about five pages of information that is even vaguely golf-specific (pp. 9-14); the rest are how to perform weight lifting and specific exercises, with some generic diet advice. The problem is that there is almost no link between the two parts of the book, as in “This exercise will help with your grip” or “These exercises strengthen your forearms, which is important because…” While I haven’t read or looked at all of them, there are 30 books by this author (listed on the back page of this one) claiming to be weight training for different sports. It looks as though the author wrote one book for weight lifting and grafted on a few pages in front and changed the title to make it seem sport-specific. In fact, there are more pages of advertising in the back of the book (six) for the author’s website than there are golf-specific pages. It would be interesting to see if the same typos are in all of the books. If you’re a lifter who wants to take up golf, this book may be helpful, but if you’re a golfer or golfer-wannabe, this book is total waste of money.

      3. Quintelier says

This book is great! I have always had a problem falling into a workout rut, and this book has designed a fun golf workout that changes every two weeks. I would recommend this book or any book in this series to someone who is training for a specific sport. The book is simple to read and you can download blank workout sheets from their website so you can track your progress. The book also has pictures explaining each exercise that is well organized by muscle group. Golf season has not started yet but I am looking forward to getting out there and crushing some great shots.

      4. Higgins says

I think, the workouts listed here would help me in every area of life, not just golf. Its a great set of exercises.
Now, if I could only find the motivation required to stick to them :)

      5. Shepherdson says

I’ve been involved in weight training at a high level for over 30 years. I took up golf later in life (late 30s) and was looking for a book that would provide exercises and routines that would help me move from pure strength-building to a program tailored for the golfer — focusing more on flexibility, core strength and other exercises that would improve a golfer’s game. This book might mention “golf” a handful of times, but is otherwise far from sport specific. That said, it’s an excellent book for anyone who wants to learn about the fundamentals of weight training — good illustrations of many of the exercises you’ll see in every gym (free weights only) and a good, comprehensive collection of pre-set programs that are geared for different skill/experience levels. I’ve downgraded it 2 stars because the mention of “golf” in the title is completely misleading — if you religiously followed the “strength building” routines from this book, you almost certainly wouldn’t improve your golf game, which relies far more on touch than brute strength.

      6. Markham says

I have been “playing” golf since high school, taking lessons here and there and playing occasionally. I’ve always been intimidated to play with men, I’ve just never given the details of playing the focus that it needed. Now all of that has changed with this book!! I have a new passion for it, and the book has really helped me focus on all of the aspects that I can improve easily. I find myself leafing through the book at night, practicing the shot or grip just the way it is so clearly illustrated in the book. And I love the focus on women’s play, which is really specific. It’s really fun to read and gets me excited about going out and practicing on the course. And the book is the perfect size to take on course and so easy to reference throughout a round. One of the best how-to sports books I’ve read!! It’s a fantastic tool.

      7. Preciado says

My 10 year old daughter has discovered the wonderful world of golf. She is a very good player. We got her this book for Christmas and she loves it. I think that it is helpful for her to see the wrong way and then the right way to stand and swing. To actually see it on paper is a great benefit. Thank you Christina Ricci for writing this book.

      8. Perera says

I highly recommend this book to those who are struggling to improve or who know they can be better — just can’t afford the fees of a pro! I have already shaved five strokes off my handicap and am doing better every time I play — keep the book on your night stand at night and your bag on the course.

      9. Iverson says

I have been working seriously on my golf game for about 2 years, and consider myself an “early” intermediate level golfer. I found this book extremely helpful. The pictures of what to do, as well as what NOT to do, were just what I needed to solidify my swing. This book is packed full of info in an easy to read format. Love it!

      10. Jarvis says

I have been playing at this game for two years unable to understand why my game was not improving.

A friend purchased this book and shared it with me.
Conclusion…… BEST GOLF BOOK FOR RIGHT HANDED WOMEN ON THE MARKET

      11. Newhall says

I preordered this book before it was released because I’ve heard so much about Stack and Tilt. When it came, I was excited. The ideas are great and incorporating parts of it into my swing has already made a major difference in by accuracy and distance. I’m looking forward to getting the entire swing down. Now – if I could just learn to put.

One criticism of the book is that it is poorly written. It’s often hard to understand and the pictures they use don’t always coordinate with the text. You really have to read the book twice to understand the nuances of the swing. I think that if the authors were to hire a professional writer and graphics person it would make a world of difference in their next version or next book. I found myself, throughout the book, reading paragraphs over and over to try to understand what they are saying.

Having said that, I still highly recommend the book to any golfer. Their entire swing makes sense. Why shift your weight and try to coordinate that body movement with striking the ball as has been taught by everyone else? It’s too hard to time and that’s not where the power comes from anyway, so why do it. It’s a very interesting book and I can now understand why a lot of the pros are switching to it. It’s a great feeling to connect with the ball correctly, feel it, hear it and watch it fly where you want it to go.

      12. Telford says

I had pre-ordered this book from amazon.com. Great idea to publish a book. These guys need to be put at the same level as Ben Hogan or above. They are the only ones that can make a difference in all golfers. Nothing else works out there I have tried them all. Even 3 years of lessons, every week did not get me to where I am now. Stack and tilt is the swing of the future and this book sets in stone. I switched to the S&T swing 3 months ago when I purchased the DVDs. The best thing I ever did. You just have to be patient and stick to the basics if you run into any problems. Otherwise, its the quickest and easiest way to become a great golfer.

The book is all you could ever expect from a well-balanced set of golf lessons. Much better than the DVDs themselves. I recommend it to anyone looking for the definitive guide on the Stack and Tilt Golf Swing. If you can’t learn the swing from this book, you can’t learn it from anyone.

      15. Noe says

I found this method very good on iron shots, if your timing is good. In my case I am hitting my driver and fairway woods fairly consistantly, so I use my old turning and shifting motion on them. If you do the drills listed I think you will hit irons more solidly than you have. Would recommend this book particularly to those having problems making solid contact with your irons.

      16. Shively says

Want to learn about the game? Interested in buying a set of clubs? Get the guide and find out about the golf craze from the beginner level. If you want to learn and want to get a before the course intro, then this is an excellent place to start.

Easy to understand and filled with basic know how information. Also guides you through the golf club lingo and aids in smart club purchases. If the golf game has interest and also intimidates you, you will appreciate this title.

Makes an excellent gift purchase for the want to be golfer!
