This item looks good on paper but in practice is quite unusable. In order to have a workable yardage reading from which to select a club, it is necessary to hold the scope absolutely rock solid while sighting on the green pin. This is an impossible task. While the manufacturer acknowledges that the reading is approximate, “approximate” takes on whole new meaning with this scope. Readings are easily + or – 20 yards. Compared with this size of an error, my eyeball does equally as good a job.

It's that time of year again when golfers around the globe are blowing off the dust that has formed over the winter months from their golf shoes and taking to the greens. With this in mind, now is a great time to look for a new pair of golf shoes.

Golf shoes are a must have piece of kit for any golfer and as essential to the game as clubs and balls, in fact most golf courses wont let you set foot on the fairways without them. Consider this; during a round of golf you could be walking 4 to 5 miles 4 hours on your feet. Can you really afford not to have a good pair of shoes? I know I have had more unpleasant golfing related blisters due to poor fitting shoes than I care to remember. To help golfers everywhere avoid the trap of poor fitting shoes I have put together a few things to remember when choosing your next pair golf waterproof of golf shoes.

The Perfect Fit

Before selecting a size, measure both feet. If you get different measurements, then choose the size that fits the larger foot.

When you try new golf shoes, wear the kind of socks that you intend to wear with your shoes. This one might sound obvious but I have been caught out by this once.

Test your shoes by standing on one foot at a time. Wiggle your toes and stand on your tiptoes.
Shoes should bend at the same place where your foot naturally bends.

Golf shoes should fit tighter in the middle portion of the foot than other shoes. This area offers the most support while swinging. The middle portion of the shoe will stretch over time.

Be sure that you have one-half inch of space from the end of your big toe to the tip of the shoe.

Keeping your feet warm and dry
Depending on the conditions you play in, you may want to consider a waterproof shoe. Waterproof shoes are more expensive, but they are much more comfortable in wet conditions. Look for a good warranty; some manufacturers offer a 2 year warranty. Leather uppers are the best for providing support and waterproofing. Shoes made of synthetic

leather are less expensive but do not breathe as well nor do they offer as much waterproof protection.

Style

Last, but not least, choose the style of shoe you feel most comfortable wearing. Golf shoes come in more options today than ever before and include traditional saddle, trendy styles, athletic styling and even golf sandals for those that take the laid back approach to the game.

  1. The Garmin Approach G5 gives more information than the SkyCaddie 2 that I used to own. Also the Garmin does not have the annual charge for course information. The hole/green layout and distances are very accurate. The scorekeeping option is nice to have, but a little cumbersome to use. The one downside with the Garmin’s course information is that there are not very many courses from Hawaii other than Oahu (check out Garmin’s website before purchasing to make sure the courses you play are available). Another downside is that the batteries last maybe 2 rounds (keep a spare pair of batteries in your bag), but better than having a rechargable battery that goes dead. Also the screen can sometimes be difficult to see if it is not viewed in the proper angle. The touch screen is easy to use.

Once you get used to the G5, you’ll find it very helpful to your game.

  2. Got mine off of amazon about 2 weeks ago, $370 plus $6 shipping. got here in less than 6 business days and was loaded with latest versions of SW, Gps SW and courses. Finally got a chance to play and it works fine. My eyes aren’t the best, and sometimes the image was a bit dim and the #s a bit small, but with glasses, everything was clear. I especially liked the features of finding a course near you (it popped up the name of the course i was on immediately, and the feature that shows your distance to green and hazards from where the ball is. drawings of holes are like the ones on the scorecard (fairways only). Distances same as my playing partners sky caddie. but the advantage is you can see all say 3 traps and water location around the green in one picture with distances from where you are. A nice unit for the casual player. I also have a skycaddie 2.5 which I’m willing to sell. My handicap is about 1.5 strokes for each club in my bag plus 6-8 for the putter. The garmin give me instant information which I am occasionally able to make use of in my choice of club. Rememember-”old golfers never die- they just lose their balls”

  3. I love this product. I like to play a lot of courses with blind shots so this comes really handy. There are times when the hazards are just perfect for my tee shots and I get into trouble. This saves me a couple of lost balls. I like the ability to point at a location and get the distance from where I am to that location. I can do this for the green also. When it is a very big green I can at least point it to front or center or back. When I get into trouble and outside the fairway I like the ability to look at how far I am from the green and if there are any hazards between me and the green. The fact that I know where I can relative to the green and fairway is great. I ten to compound mistakes not knowing how to get back on track when I get into trouble. Like all GPS it is a time saver. I like the fact that it finds the nearest course to where I am so it is ready to go when I play. I can also view courses I’ve not played yet while at the hotel. This equipment means no more looking at yard sticks. I’ve not used it in rain so I do not know how waterproof will work but I will not be afraid to use it. My battery life last 4 rounds in the summer. Have not tried it in winter. I don’t use the score feature so that might save some energy. I use the alkaline Duracell. My hope that this product gets slimmer. It is not bad to hang it on my belt while not hitting a club but I take it off when I hit the ball. Just that weird feeling hanging until I get used to it. I’d like to see a better screen also. My friend have a iPhone and that is clearer but I am not critical about it. Just a wish.

  4. Excellent quality we’ve come to expect from Garmin. Only suggestion for next generation is recharger.

  5. Palmisano says:

I bought the G5 in Nov. ‘09. I checked the list of courses before buying. All the courses I played in the North Myrtle Beach area were there. The first time I used it the course was NOT there. I called customer service, who was extremely helpful. The G5 needed to be updated with the latest courses. After completing the update, all the courses were now available.
I find the G5 yardage to be extremely accurate. It is better than some of the course markings. If you are laying up before a hazzard, the touch screen feature will give you the exact yardage to it.

    I highly reccommend this unit.

  6. Can not reliably use the golf scope to estimate the yardage since it is impossible for me to hold it steady. I should have listened to bad review of this product. Wish I could return it except my children broke it while they were playing with this.

  7. rather than spending an extra $10, I bought this one. useless. maybe it’s just the one I got, but it’s blurry. I had one (that was left in a cart) that I used to find my ball more than for distances, but this one can’t focus on anything. you get what you pay for.

  8. I bought this and found it to be extremely cheaply made and not water proof at all, I would not recommend buying this unless you are looking to waste money on such a poorly made item not even good enough for a gift.

  9. This scope is what it is, a small, graduated monocular. You must hold it steady to use it effectively. It should be used to augment your distance estimates, in addition to course markers, etc. You don’t get sophistication at this price. For beginning golfers, it’s better than a wag!

  10. This item looks good on paper but in practice is quite unusable. 11. This sunscreen is just the way it promises to be. Applies clear, waterproof, no strong scent (which is important for my husband and all the other men out there) and the ingredients are not carcinogenic. What more can you ask for? I use it, too.

Update: I just recently looked at the ingredient list again and was shocked to see that it does contain oxybenzone (carcinogenic) and therefore I can’t recommend it anymore. Sorry! The formula was apparently changed :-( .
